Heroes to Zeros

by Ashley Jensen in Blog, Christianity, LIFE

It sucks when your heroes let you down.

Recently I had a conversation with someone who was once a hero in my life and he said some awful and condemning things in person and via text. He is a pastor but now he’s just someone I used to know. This past season has been the darkest of my life and I’ve needed more support than ever. Unfortunately this guy has let me down time and time again even to the detriment of my family and finance.

At some point you must get to the place in your life when you have to guard yourself from getting hurt. If there is someone in your life who you look up to and you don’t leave their presence feeling like a BETTER person, then it’s time to stop looking up to them. I’ve worked in a ton of large ministries and unfortunately it’s been the same story. If you aren’t building their thing then you might as well have fallen off the face of the planet. Thankfully I’m at a different place now but it still stings when your heroes let you down. So you’ve been betrayed by someone you once looked up to, what now?

1. Forgive
Right off the bat, this is a hard one. I want revenge. I want people to feel the pain they’ve inflicted on me but I know this isn’t God’s will. I’ve heard it said that “Bitterness is like swallowing poison and expecting the other person to die.” Forgiveness is an opportunity to let the anointing flow in your situation and the anointing breaks the yoke! The yoke of carrying the heavy weight of unforgiveness. (Check out #3 on this post for more!)

2. Forget
If someone doesn’t want anything to do with you then God has removed them as a part of your destiny. Why would you try and remember something God wants you to forget?

Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, -Philippians 3:13 NIV

That person isn’t a part of your destiny so stop trying to include them in something God is excluding. Forget them and move forward! You aren’t throwing them away but you are blessing them and moving on. Don’t hold on to what God is removing.

These may seem simple but they are definitely not easy. We must win the battle in our minds and not let people live in our heads without paying rent! Reserve those spaces for people who deserve your energy.
