yup! Can totally relate! oh to have been a fly on the wall, to watch the bee bomb the three…Yeah, feelin a bit metaphorically poetic… You know an abstract question I have that I probably would not have been able to have resisted asking is whether or not those ladies had honey in their coffee…

Maybe, just MAYBE it was just the bee’s way of messin up their day like the honey farmer did his…You know it takes a lot of bee labor to get that honey built up in those combs…I’d be mad too if they were stealing the spoils of my labor and using them to sweeten their lil’ soccer mom latte’ experience at my expense…If i were a bee that is…Makes sense right?…bygones…

Dude I totally had an experience like that as well. I work with a few atheists and have had a discussion on Christianity with one of them. So wanted to defend myself and what I believed in but totally felt that God was telling me basically he wasn’t ready yet. That I needed to just listen and not be judgmental. At that moment God reminded me that four years ago I was an atheist and how I reacted to those who preached to me and judged me on my lifestyle. (It’s funny how God can you remind you of so much in one moment) Anyways, since then that guy totally sees me differently and I love it! I totally believe that he sees Jesus in a new light. Sorry I wrote a little mini blog. So I guess all I’m saying is that I can relate to your conversation with muscles. lol muscles!

I am an atheist, just sort of came across your post when tag surfing.

My best friend is very religious. Southern Baptist of all choices :). Despite our different religious beliefs, we are best friends and would go to any lengths to help the other. She used to try to convert me- at one point I was “on the fence”. I decided she had some valid points and decided to read the bible which was my undoing. Had I not read the bible, I might still be undecided. Since reading, I’ve rejected it and have been quite happy. I have also given up trying to convert her ;).

It seems that people think athiests are without morals, tatoo’d, peirced, and crazy. I’m none of the above (unless I make it to 100, then I’m getting a tatoo). Most people assume I’m Catholic because of my views.

As an athiest in the United States I feel quite like a minority. It’s not “easy” being an athiest. Not that I’m tempted to believe, not in that way, but in the way that most people who find that out try to tell you that you’ll go to hell or try to point out numerous ways that I’m wrong about what I believe. I don’t typically bring it up because people do get quite upset about it and I never understand that.

I don’t get upset if people are Christian, Jewish, Muslim, or even voodoo practitioners. But yet they get upset that I don’t believe.

I think your attitude toward the conversation was probably something very rare for an athiest to experience. Myself, I very rarely come across people who accept me the way I accept them. I rarely tell people I’m an athiest IRL unless asked. In fact a friend I once had said after about a year of knowing her that she would not be friends with an athiest. I had not brought up my religious veiws prior to that but felt she should know that I was an athiest so she could decide if our friendship would overcome that. It didn’t.

Anyway, just saying Thanks :). Even if you never convert muscles, you might end up with a great friend.

@forthelifeofme what a great comment! Thanks for reading… I just want to love people and if they build a relationship with God through Jesus, that’s awesome. But for me, (and should be for all Christians) it’s about loving God and loving people. It’s impossible to say you love God and not love people. Thanks for sharing.

Too many times I get intimidated by “HAVING A QUIET TIME” (making it a have-to) thinking you have to read a whole bunch of chapters and pray really hard and be totally serious and not enjoy it. It’s good to remember to chill and enjoy His presence (that it’s a get-to) and not put so much pressure on myself to hear His voice or be totally spiritual. Whatever He wants me to get out of it.

You’re welcome man – and it has been my experience, too. I’ve recognized in myself that I sometimes use the phrase “struggled with sin” because it makes it sound like it was just too hard to overcome. Puts the blame on something (or someone) else and not on me. I’m learning to take more ownership of what I do and call sin what it is – sin.

I have been seriously praying about this issue

and this blog and Jason’s post is an answer to it….you know I have been learning a lot about how overcoming sin and I honestly I have gotten lazy ..I learned some different things…but I know God wanted me to “press in” and chase my name…
and had not been really doing that as I should( with all effort)

like really putting all effort to enter that rest…
anyway I have been thinking I know God doesn’t want us to sins but I don’t want to do it in vain by trying to overcome sin in through the flesh ,fleshly efforts , but by his Holy Spirit
        Romans 8:12-13

so pretty much that is my question how to resist sin though his spirit not not through the flesh

there is a verse in one of the letter so Peter where he says to resist Him,standing in the faith so that’s an answer..

Do you understand what I mean?

        For me it Hebrews 4:11

any way Thanks so much for the blog and thanks Jason Vang for you honesty which encourages me to be honest with myself …it can be hard but a necessary step to be able to make a step in the right direct

August 8, 2011 by Ashley Jensen Reply

Great question! My thoughts on that… regardless of “how” you resist temptation, its done through and by the Spirit. The bible is clear that there is no good thing in us except Jesus ( )…. without the Spirit of God it’s all flesh. There’s no way the flesh would resist the flesh. If there is resistance against sin, it’s by the Spirit. Hope that helps.

I was reading this post, and for a moment there I thought that the Oasis church you mention is my own church. I live in the Dominican Republic, sharing the island with Haiti. And I attend Iglesia Cristiana Oasis (Oasis Christian Church) in Santo Domingo.

I relate to what you express in this post, especially because Haiti is right next to us, and yet, we forget that there are so many people in terrible need RIGHT NEXT TO US! I don’t even have to go that far, because there are Haitian children and beggars in our streets. But our hearts are hardened. And this is something we have to fight against constantly.

I know that this was a terrible thing that happened, but I’m glad that the Lord allowed it to be used for good. I know that my own church has been working with Haiti so much more because of this, and even supporting pastors and their families. I just hope that we might not forget about them later, that our love and service to them might continue always.

I tell my college students all the time that we are never tempted with something we don’t like. The areas we sin in are the things that, some way or another, we want. The enemy can’t tempt me with getting drunk. I’ve never liked that drunk feeling. But he knows the things I like, and is able to tempt me in that way.

It definitely is very humbling to admit when I screw up, but something I try to do nonetheless. When a leader is able to show that they aren’t perfect, and is humble enough to admit his faults, it does open the door for not only respect, but also for true community to develop – and for others to follow suit and realize that hiding your faults isn’t the right way to go.

I believe judgement means to assume things based on heresay or appearance that one knows nothing of concerning another person. The internet has made people so opinionated just because there is a comment section on every article such as this one, and their words betrays their very hearts. To the TRUE follower, he has no authority to judge people OTHER THAN the authority of scripture. Confronting people out of love about their sin is not worldy judgement but righteous judgement.

I agree with your article and it is such a hard lesson for all believers as we all have fallen victim. Yet i recently read a sermon series on apathy and the christian walk and one thing that struck me is the difference between being judgemental and making judgements based on anothers behavior. As cheistians we are called to use our intellect to make judgements and decisions based on actions and behaviors. If a fellow christian is acting outside their faith we are called to confront the action not the man. It is difficult and takes maturity but too often i see christians who turn a blind eye and say it is not for me to judge. Its a hard line to find the balance in truth and light. Just a thought. Great article though.

Thank you for your words this morning. My day got of to a rough start and i was feeling sorry for myself. After reading your devotion I realized how selfish I am. It’s not about me…. it’s all about Him and His love. My wife bit my head off first thing this morning, really for no reason, and I wanted to fire back. Then I read your words and my whole attitude changed. She just called (she had a doctor’s appointment and made her insult as she was walking out the door.) and I was very calm, loving and patient with her. Love is much better than conflict. Thanks again. You helped to mold my heart for the day by sharing His word!!

I am so grateful when I have a opportunity to witnesses love reveal itself. Not long ago, I was journaling along this same train of thought. In my stillness, I asked the question ; Lord how did I fail at real Love in my previous relationships?? The answer came to me saying it was because you did not understand, accept , and embrace the love I created you to be!!! Wow was the only response l could muster up. Moreover, the answer to your question today is ,I am not only what I think. I am what I was formed in,filled with and function out of. Likewise , I truly believe our inward condition is what determines our exterior exhibition. I must thank you for this share because it further demonstrates the world is our university and everything and everyone are our teachers. When we learn from our painful and frustrating experiences we become the light in the matters of the heart and journey back to our most purest form.( LOVE) Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them

I think that a lot of people struggle with this concept. I know I have for a majority of my life. People relive their past; things that have broken then, destroyed then, and impacted them in a negative way. Jesus forgives us and forgets! That’s his promise to us! If we believe his promise to us, why do we continue to live in the past? It’s satan’s way of trying to tear us down! If we are in God’s word daily, and use this weapon to fight off satan and his demons, then no one can be against us! No one can make us feel worthless or remind us of our past! We need to wake up people! Forgive yourself and shine for Jesus!

This is a strong commentary. I definitely agree that our dreams, goals, and pursuits will perish without a vision and lack of knowledge. We need to understand and be fully aware of the plans God has in store for each and everyone of us. When we know what our meaning is in life (our gifts), then we are able to put that in perspective with how God wants us to release our gifts to help others. When we center our life around God’s plan for our life and understand our meaning, we are in a position to bless others!

Interesting, refreshing perspective on restoration. When we go through (or choose to) difficult times, we tend to focus on what we lost, how can we get it back, place blame, develop a sense of bitterness, denial, and so forth. As you said…Jesus is the master fabricator that was sent to
restore (bring life and bring it more abundantly). Once we get our focus
on Jesus…we will live in the victory that he prepared for us!

This really really helped me.. WOW.. .. hope you don’t mind if I share this… I .was saved aged 28 in 1999. I felt I had been robbed of a life with Christ since it had been such a battle and I had made so many mistakes I felt a lot of regret. Although my church is amazing all my friends were younger and even though they joked about God taking ten years off my age I felt really robbed for a long time I felt so sad and didn’t understand why God had left it so late for me. I got sick four years ago and hit rock bottom again and nearly lost my job due to not being able to work, i was bullied on my return and I was thinking what is going on??… then this amazing leader said to me..” its like no one ever told you you don’t have to fight anymore, let God fight for you, just rest in Him and be happy with who you are because Gods timing is perfect He makes NO mistakes” God gave me this verse “It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in humans” I realised that its so vital to have a strong daily encounter with God and let Him take the battle, let Him put the right people in your life, who will encourage you and also He will restore ALL the years the locusts have eaten.. So thank you for this word it reminded me again.. God restores us beautifully,,

Ashley, I have to honestly say my inner circle no longer exists mostly by choice. I am a great friend and embody many of the characteristics you described in your article how ever the norm of reciprocity, as we sociologists call it, has often been non-existent in my life. Will God re-establish this area of my life? Prayerfully! However in this season in my life I have a standard for those who wish to be a part of that deep inner area of my life: if you are not rowing in the same spiritual and relational direction then one of us must get out of the boat.

  • Alex
July 15, 2015 by Alex Reply

Really great word that is so true. The thing is we often find that we allow ourselves to grow into these hurts and sins in what we condemn ourselves of. These usually we find grow into HABITS, in which we are blinded to and just seem like “the way of life”. The funny thing about the word Habit is that IT is also part of it. So to remove IT from our lives, renewing and transforming our mind is the key. So if we remove the H, we’re left with A.BIT, we remove the A, we’re left with B.I.T, remove the B and we’re left with IT, and the”I” (which is ourselves thinking we are stuck in our problems) can only be removed by the “t”(THE CROSS)
Then when people find the truth in Christ, Liberty can truly be received and life can only move forward and up.

I agree with what you said in the context you said it but there are people you need to love from a distance. I actually use that phrase when I am counseling someone who is a believer but is being physically abused by a family member. They feel like they are supposed to stay because Jesus would want them to love them. I have zero problem telling them that they need to love “that” person from a distance. I only commented because that statement can’t be a blanket statement used across the board. But again, I agree with the context in which you used your example. But if someone is being abused, get out of that abusive situation. Jesus is ok with you loving that person from a distance. He doesn’t want you sticking around getting the heck beat out of you night after night.

    • Ashley Jensen
July 22, 2015 by Ashley Jensen Reply

Absolutely, context is key. Having love for someone and actually Doug the act of loving someone are two different things. I believe we can have love for all people but for love to change people it has to be seen, felt, and displayed. It’s definitely an action. Thanks for the comment!

All very true especially on submitting to the process of God’s plan – I share in similar type of experiences and I have to say it doesn’t come easy, it takes dying to self more than once, but the fruits of it all are most rewarding. God’s yoke is always easy if we learn to trust and abide in the Vine. Thanks Ashley for sharing, it is very encouranging and to know that God is not finished with us yet. He knows us better than we know ourselves.

Amen. This message was right on time, as I am going through a time like this. I’ve been going through being overlooked for some time now, but reading this confirmed what I believed the overlooking to be. I’ve believed that God is just preparing me for greatness and preparing me for the ability to handle the favor he will shower over my life.

Loved this. When I had to sell my car months ago…(and have yet to afford a new one)–I discovered how many friends I really had. (I had more than I thought!) When I had/have to get a ride to my church singles/social group–I found out I have some really great friends.

And ya know…I get to know these friends better during “car conversations” on our ride there and back to my home. It’s really wonderful when we figure these things out in what we as humans assume are “bad times”; always then God is doing something we didn’t expect.

Good word. My mom always said, if you get one true friend in your life, you’ve got something. The only thing you didn’t speak on… the Bible says love not only in word, but in deed. Love is an action word. It takes action to prove we love someone. God created us for love. To be loved and be love. Humans crave it. But you have to know how to love yourself before you can love others. God bless you Ashley!

The message is quite instructive. I got to know for real that anger and pride are temptation. Meanwhile understanding again that the temptation comes mostly from weak spots in us. To reframe and refrain is actually pointing for me to always think ahead by the Spirit to avert possible pitfalls.

Point 4 struck me. We enjoy a certain level of ignorance. Intelligent enough to know that if we read that book out go to that conference we will have no excuse but to change or live with our now opened eyes and bothered conscience.
Better to stay blind ignorant but at least comfortable we think.

I would always say to my husband, driving the family van to church is not being the spiritual leader of the family. To this day, three of my adult children are not walking with GOD. My other 5 have no earthly idea what a Godly man or father is, and this breaks me heart. They don’t know how to find one themselves. The older ones have followed their father’s lead, not their mother’s.

I am so glad she did because I would make myself miss out on this experience. Thank you Jesus!

I believe my destiny is to be an encouraging force to my children and grandchildren. I am 58, I am on my third marriage, I have no relationship with my parents or my sister. I have survived breast cancer twice, and a very serious brain aneurysm that has left me with permanent disabilities. I can no longer work or drive and I have learned in the past 3 years of healing from this that God has me in the palm of his hand. I have 3 beautiful daughters who are happily married. I have 6 awesome grandchildren that I love more than life itself.
I have an amazing husband who is exactly the person I need to be with at this point in my life. We all love the Lord.
I may be tucked away from the world, but I can encourage them and love them and support them from my little place in life. I love the Internet which can connect me to all of you and my family everyday. I love being a prayer warrior. I have seen these physical issues push me into my personal destination. I can’t tell you every day is a picnic but I am not saying that I am glad I have allowed God to take control of my life.

Ashley, Keep on encouraging people. The world needs to know that God uses the least to get the most. I suffered abuse as a child, domestic violence by my ex husband who told me I was worthless, siblings who’ve turned their backs on me and enjoyed my suffering friends who cast me aside like garbage, I had a mental breakdown and almost lost my only child to gun violence at the hands of a stranger and then there was my own attempt to end my life.

This is why I love a good God comeback testimony. He’s not done with me and I know I’m to share my own testimony. I follow you on twitter because God took the lesser, and now because of him, you are the greater!

What a blessing message; it’s 02:14am God touched me through his spirit saying I have something to show you; then I picked up my phone and started scrolling on the tweets; unfortunately I came across this tweet and said I must go through this article; pulled off my bed and start reading. When I finished I felt like something has touched me deeply in my heart and a certain burden in my heart was easened. I feel like taking off again; I feel like going forward; I can see the real love of God in my life.

I love this very thought-provoking blog … As I get older, I oftentimes realize my frustration level increases as I am faced with what I am no longer able to do in my own strength, and then my Great and Mighty Father gently reminds me, just like you said, that “…you were created to fail, else why would I have formed you from dust…” So thank you for the reminder that God wants us fully dependent on Him, acting in faith, and believing in His promise that His plans are not to harm us, but to prosper our soul in Him … Love you, Mom

When Paul wrote to the Corinthians about being in chains, he said it was to his good because he had access to the whole pratorean guard; and when he wrote about other teachers preaching out of selfish ambition, it wasn’t important. He said that what WAS important was that the NAME of Jesus was going forth. I love the way God speaks to your heart, and I love you and your willingness to “rightly divide the Word of God” … Mom

Wow..thanks so much for this Ashley! I think I am at that point where I just need to try to surrender, instead of get defensive….we can only do that through Christ’s strength…cause my flesh can just kick up…lol …especially when your trying to love people, and do the best you can.In the physical just feels like they take pleasure in putting you at the back of the line…beit ,with always competing with you, seeing what you do wrong instead of right…or just underestimating you in front of other’s.And does hurt…but…if we are to love our enemies…than I guess we will be tested…till we shine that way.Sometimes…I have just let that new woman in Christ shine through…other times…my pride got the best in me…but I am a work in progress. Thanks for being real and relateable in your sharing…..Praise Jesus!

This speaks to me and I have wrestled with the fact the no one is without sin. In my experience it has been the other person talking to others at my work and at church, slandering me….u see others who have believed what has been said because the person has a certain position / status at work /church……so much I could share. A lot of hurt about situations over these last 4 years, however, I will continue I to seek God and give it to Him and thank Him for strengthening me, for what He has for my future. I most definitely want to release the pride of being right! Thank you for this word as it has helped me to see another perspective! I don’t want to walk in self-righteousness!!!

I love this because I can identify with some of these things, my life of obedience gave up men, five years ago, wrote three book’s to minister, giving, no car for 23 months, in college failed two classes walking and fighting with my five year old, school refused to reimburse my cabs,no parents helped,my mom lived further, I was angry because I am a advocate who fights and speaks for others and volunteer at the school and the other mom’s never do. I was angry, disappointed. God was not pleased with Huntsville. Many times I said I regret helping women giving out many free books. I had to see the big picture that God is faithful and he is my support and I have to rely. I had to cry But I will always try. I can’t stop obeying God because of people. I am learning to keeping my eyes on God and remember that He will give me the victory this was only a test. I don’t always pass but I take the class over until I do the same lessons will come to teach me. I can’t move on to the next level until I pass and the next test is ten times harder but get it I must trust God to carry me through when I get tired.

Hi there! How are you! Great article on love’s varied forms.I like what you said here: “To live in love,to live in the Spirit,we have to overcome our own emotions and forgive and love with no recourse.”Yes…that is the highest form of love….and we all ate not there…but I think he’s working on us…I know there are times…I totally miss it…and times I totally hit the mark of love..I think there are so many factors…When you feel like your being loved and accepted for your own person hood…by a core group of people in your life….it should be easier to love.I think its when we feel like God has forgotten us,or we don’t feel we have true blue friends in our life,or it seems like our needs are not being met….its not so easy to keep loving unconditionally.Yet love at its deepest core is a choice. It’s learning and choosing to walk in the spirit of love,of Christ, above our own nature.Selfishness vrs selflessness.I know I’ve totally blown it at times, yet I’ve hit the mark too.Words from my song..”Sometimes I am mess/sometimes masterpiece/I am at my best, when God’s love works through me….that sums it up….we are all at our best, when His love moves in us…..Thank God He doesn’t give up on us….He is working on us! Great article…Thanks!

I praise our Father God for making His Grace available for me during my “valley days”. He spoke to me and said,”My Grace is Sufficient for You.” I was delivered immediately. I shared my testimony in my book; “The Sufficiency of God’s Grace”.

This is great! It’s very similar to John C Maxwell’s Law of Process, which is one of my favourites. It can certainly be frustrating though that God doesn’t care about time!

It’s easy to have faith when everything is going good, but through major transitions it’s hard. My life is going through major transition in every area right now. That’s when I look back on other big things in my life that were huge and devastating at the time and didn’t know why they were happening but in them see how God brought me through it and I reflect on Romans 8:28. God will continue to show himself faithful even when we don’t know how things will play out. Ashley thanks for the word of encouragement! May God continue to bless you and show you is faithfulness and provision!

Hello, Mr. Jensen. I’m greatly inspired by your writing. I realize at the age of 52, that change is inevitable. Yet, I choose to progress and find myself being challenged. Change is difficult, but I know it is necessary for wholesome well being in the Lord. I’m celebrating 8 yrs. and 6 months of being free from crackcocaine, drugs, alcohol and cigarettes. By the blood of Jesus Christ, I’ve been made free. God has me called to Teach the Gospel, and I Teach Sunday and Preach at my local church. Serving Jesus Christ is wonderful. But, I’m learning to rest in his finished works at the Cross. Thank you for your inspiration to me as a believer. I want to write a book someday

A timely and thought provoking message on how blessed we are as a people of God, able to experience His love, mercy, and gracious tenderness … He died so that our spirits would one day be able to ascend freely to Him to live and reign for an eternity at the foot of His blessed throne .. I’ve quoted it before, but it bears repeating …”We were not created for a time, but we were created for an eternity …” Happy 4th Pastor Ashley ..

Thanks for helping me to walk in the liberty that Christ has given me, by writing. Please remember me in your thoughts and prayers. Stay Blessed and enjoy your day. Thanks! Mr. A. Jensen

When I was 15 I knew a black drummer, he was good though. My dad though would not put up with this. I knew this was wrong.
Later on in life, my son(6), and I were planning a camping trip he asked could he bring someone with him, I said sure! That boys momma brought his friend over, I discovered he was black, that’s ok… Thank You Lord!!

I agree, we need to live on unity. However, we need to lead by example like you did. We should not just sit by and laugh at racist comments made by people who have never experienced racism,or sexism themselves, its just not right, and we all need to speak out against it.

I love this quote, to me it illustrates our human prejudices based on our own judgmental reflections.
“The truth was a mirror in the hands of God. It fell, and broke into pieces. Everybody took a piece of it, and they looked at it and thought they had the truth.
